Problem

A pop-up experience in collaboration with Hinge and The Windshield Wiper.

In the post-pandemic world, longing for meaningful connections nearby, we need experiences that direct our attention back from the abstracted concept of the ‘world’ to the ordinary reality, where people live, die, fall in love, and struggle. Through observing their realities, we establish our reality that is more humanistic and authentic. Therefore, I wanted to design a pop-up experience in collaboration with Hinge and The Windshield Wiper.

This is what longboard dancing looks like. Dancers usually post-edit music or listen to music while they dance.

Here’s what Jambo sounds like. The rider’s dancing style is captured by the board and transformed into sound.

Context

“I think more and more we're connecting through our technology, but that means missing out on the kinds of connections we can experience in real life.”

Force-sensitive resistor: sandwich the Velostat between two squares of copper tape.

Drum Pad: based on which part of the board is pressed, different samples will play.

Concept

A journey of finding and building connection with a partner through experiencing Alberto Mielgo’s Windshield Wiper embedded in a Market Hall.

The intent is to inspire guests to pay attention to ordinary settings and people around them because the interactive touch-points could be activated in the most unexpected places or by an unexpected person.

There isn’t a shortcut to find a connection. The key is to let it happen and be ready for those moments by keeping your heart's eyes open.

Storytelling

Inspiration from Sleep No More

The story starts with the gentleman sitting in a restaurant, reflecting on the question: “what is love?” Then, the film goes on to show the audience a montage of moments of different kinds of love in society, which makes the question harder to answer. Is it about hurting each other? Sitting together in silence? Lost and pain? Love at first sight? Growing old together? Worn out? Quarrel? ...? Or a color? In the end, the main character realizes that love is the secret society.

shape & size

the shape and size of the new sensor pad resemble a foot, which is more ergonomic for dancers.

when the dancer is simply pushing forward, the front foot stays near the center. This new layout makes music interaction more intentional.

fabrication

old sensors are unpredictable and too sensitive. we added more elastic material as a cushion in-between. New sensors are more reliable, stable, and durable.
